Battle Studies

Whenever I listen to John Mayer I am always reminded about a very specific time in my life. His first album Room for Squares came out when I was starting middle school and reminds me of those (awkward) days.
Then his last album, Continuum, came out in the fall of 2006, field hockey season my junior year of high school. It was a few weeks before my neighbor Michelle Gardner-Quinn, a senior at UVM at the time, was brutally raped and murdered after a night out with friends. Some of those songs -- especially "Gravity" and "Heart of Life" -- helped me get through that tough time.
Heart of Life also reminds me of one of my friends Linden. I had my 18th birthday party in a suite at the Verizon Center to see the John Mayer concert that summer. When he started playing that song she walked over to me, hugged me and told me she knew what that song meant to me, and spent the rest of the concert glued to my side.
When John's song "Say" was released I was stuck in the middle of a fight between my two closest friends at the time. I ended up sitting them down and saying what I needed to say and what I thought about their issue.
Today John's new album, Battle Studies, came out. I've listened to it a few times through already and I love it. I just wonder what these songs are going to remind me of a few years down the road...
